The Ferber sleep training technique popularized by Dr. Richard Ferber, a pediatrician and author of the book Solve Your Child’s Sleep Program is often confused with CIO, but it’s quite different.
In his book, Dr. Ferber provides a few pointers on how to get started with the process. After going through your bedtime routine, place your baby in their crib, drowsy but still awake and leave the room.
If the baby starts crying, Dr. Ferber suggests waiting for a while – about three minutes before entering the room to calm them down. Don’t pick her up or feed her – verbal soothing and patting is okay.
Leave the room again and repeat the Ferber method naps technique again this time wait for five minutes, then ten minutes, and so on as you monitor the progress. Ferber refers to this method as “progressive waiting.”
You should continue using the Ferberizing technique for at least a week. Continue to increase the time between visits and keep at it until they fall asleep. When they wake up, you restart the check-and-console process all over again.
The idea is that after a few days or weeks of gradually increasing that waiting time, most babies will eventually learn to fall asleep on their own.
Also known as the Sleep Lady Shuffle, the chair method is a gradual sleep training technique that requires a great level of discipline for the parent. In fact, you’ll need to set aside at least two weeks to implement this technique and of course, get a chair.
The method involves sitting on a chair next to the baby’s bed until she sleeps. Each time they wake up, you sit back down in your chair until they go back to sleep. The idea here is not to help the baby fall asleep, actually, you should not give your baby any attention.
Sitting on the chair is a way of reassuring them that you’re there as they sleep. Every few days or nights, you move your chair a bit further away from the crib until you’re finally out of her room.
The chair method sleep training is of course not for every parent (or child) because being present in the room and not comforting the baby when they cry can be quite confusing and maybe too much stimulation, depending on the baby’s age and development stage.
The wake to sleep technique can be used to break a habit of frequent night waking and resettle a child’s sleep cycle. Dr. Harvery Karp, the proponent of the Wake-and-Sleep method and author of The Happiest Baby on the Block, recommends doing all the normal things you would do to get the baby to sleep including feeding, swaddling and rocking before putting them in their crib.
Before you start the process, it’s important to keep a sleep diary of the times your baby is waking in the night for at least a week. Once you have established the time your baby is habitually waking, set your alarm 30 minutes or an hour before to their habitual waking time.
Remember the main aim of this technique is not to wake your baby up but to simply re-set their sleep cycle. So, try patting, shushing, talking gently enough so that they perhaps turn over or open their eyes briefly.
The gentle stimulation will trigger another sleep cycle for your baby, allowing them to sleep beyond their usual waking time. Leave the room and allow the child to fall back to sleep.
You may need to do this once, or a couple of nights in order to break the waking cycle. If the child wakes up in the process, you can try doing the technique several minutes before the next nap.
Pick Up Put Down Method
Promoted by Tracy Hogg, a sleep expert and author of the Secrets of the Baby Whisperer: How to Calm, Connect, and Communicate with your Baby, the pick up put down method or PU/PD technique main objective is to teach the baby to soothe themselves to sleep without feeling abandoned.
For pick up put down sleep training method to work, ensure you have a consistent bedtime routine, then place your baby in her crib or bassinet while sleepy but still awake. If the baby doesn’t fuss or cry, leave the room. If he/she starts crying, follow the stop, wait, and listen approach – don’t pick him/her up immediately, rather watch and listen to see if she actually needs more help.
In case the baby continues to feel distressed and worked up, go back and pick her up (the pick-up part) and comfort her for a minute or two. Then, put her back down (the put down part) in the crib making sure she’s still awake. You should repeat this process until the baby settles down and eventually falls asleep.
According to Tracy, this technique works best for children aged 4 to 8 months, but it can also be used for babies who are a little older than that.
It’s also worth noting that the cycle of picking up and putting down may be quite stimulating for some babies. Instead of relaxing them, they may find the technique disruptive, which affects the sleep training process negatively. So, before trying it out, know that this is not going to be a quick fix. Patience is key.
The Weissbluth method is often confused with Ferberizing because both require a certain degree of crying to teach the child how to soothe themselves to sleep. But while the Ferber technique requires the parent to be present in the room and provide comfort at regular intervals, the Weissbluth technique uses extinction or “no comfort at all” to teach the baby not to wake up and cry at night.
According to Marc Weissbluth, a pediatrician and author of Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child, a parent will simply leave the baby in their crib to cry it out and will not re-enter to calm them down unless the baby needs feeding, changing, or there is an emergency. This may sound a little bit cruel, but parents argue that the method produces the quickest results for baby sleep.
However, there are a few things to know before you dive into the Weissbluth method.
- Wait until your baby is six months to try it. The main reason for this is that a baby who is less than one year old requires more frequent attention and of course frequent feedings and diaper- changing. This requires more attention from you than the method recommends.
- Leave the baby’s room and refrain from re-entering– even if the baby cries. The Weissbluth method requires the parent to put the baby down in her crib to sleep, and don’t come back until it’s time for feeding or an emergency.
Consistency is the name of the game. According to the technique, your child should finally cry it out until she falls asleep. If you stick with the method long enough, the technique works pretty fast, and crying should go away after just a few nights.
