Bear has continued to make slight improvements to their mattress to make it firmer and accommodating for all sleepers. We decided to test the mattress and present our honest Bear mattress review based on construction, quality, firmness, and support.
The most outstanding thing we noted was the innovative Celliant technology that helps improve the overall recovery of athletes and sleepers with an active lifestyle.
Bear flagship mattress offers two high-quality options for all types of sleepers, which we will cover in this review.
The Bear Mattress: It offers Medium-Firm feel thanks to its all-foam layers. The top foam features a cooling graphite-gel that is incredibly soft. Underneath is a breathable Celliant cover plus responsive polyfoam layers that conform to your body to give you a comfortable feel.

Additionally, it comes with a five-inch luxury system that is made up of a cooling gel foam at the top, an original Serene foam, and a transitional layer of responsive polyfoam. Bear family business was founded in 2015 to help people with an active lifestyle get better rest. With a team of high-profile athletes, fitness enthusiasts, and medical professionals, Bear has established a unique business model in the mattress industry to offer a product that helps you rejuvenate after intense activity.
In addition to creating the best all-foam mattress in the market, the company also manufactures and sells a hybrid mattress, including adjustable bases, sheets, and pillows. We will cover more about the Bear mattress on this review and a little about its hybrid counterpart later on.
Let’s get started.
What Stands Out in a Bear Mattress.
The Bear features four layers of foam material that combine to give a 10” profile mattress.
The Cover: The Bear cover is made with Celliant, an FDA certified material that studies suggest could accelerate recovery while sleeping. Bear indicates that the Celliant redirects the body’s natural energy back as infrared light for faster recovery, more energy, and increased performance. Overall, the cover provides a cozy, teddy-bear-like feel to ensure you are comfortable throughout the night.
Top Layer: Bear features 2” of memory foam made of graphite-gel memory foam. This material has a slow response to pressure, thus allowing the sleeper to sink into the mattress for immediate pressure relief at the hips and shoulders. Another interesting fact about this material is that it helps regulate room temperature to keep you cool throughout the night.
Transition Layer: At the center is a transition layer made of quick response foam and is slightly softer than the other layers. This helps to control the amount of sinkage between the dense support foam and the upper layer. It bolsters the sleeper so that they can feel more on the top of the mattress instead of sinking too much in it.
Dense Foam Base: The bottom is made of a 6” high-density polyfoam. The material is quite durable and firm enough to provide the right back support for all types of sleepers. Back sleepers who are looking for a surface to offer overall back relief, without much restrictions when changing positions will love this mattress.
All in all, sturdy construction that comprises of gentle memory foam and taut poly foam creates a powerful surface that’s is pressure-relieving, supportive, and optimized for recovery.
When it comes to firmness, the Bear Mattress offers a slightly above average firmness. The top layer, which is all-foam is very soft, but upon pressing in, you feel a little firmer that comes from the transition layer and base layer. This will be an advantage to most sleepers, especially because the upper layers help relieve a great deal of pressure and are rather soft.
Additionally, it’s responsive, offers good balance and long-term support between the middle layers, and you will get enough resistance even when you switch sleeping position as it perfectly contours to your body shape.
Note that heavy people (250 lb and over) might have a different experience on this mattress. Their weight could press a bit harder through the soft layer all the way to the firmer layers beneath. As a result, larger side sleepers could feel some pressure on their shoulder and hips.
If you share a bed with a partner, it’s important to consider how your mattress responds to motion transfer. Do a test -lie on one side of the mattress and let your partner move around on the other side and see if you feel the movement.
The bear mattress seems to handle motion transfer pretty well. Most of it is because the mattress has no springs or moving parts. Even if it has bouncy middle layers, bear mattress keeps thing quite stable and reduces motion transfer.
Similarly, the usual nighttime movements such as turning or tossing, won’t cause any disturbance at night. This mostly depends on the weight of your partner and how often they move around.
Overall, unless the person is jumping up and down on the bed, Bear mattress is extremely quiet and excels at motion isolation.
Edge support is the amount of support your mattress offers around the sides. If it’s lacking, you may feel like you will fall off when you sit or lie down near the edges. Edge support varies depending on the individual, but it’s especially important for couples who share a smaller size mattress.
Given that Bear has an updated firmer design, it scores high in edge support similar to most bed-in-box models. Sitting on the mattress will yield some noticeable compression on the edges to provide ultimate support without feeling like you will fall off the bed the next minute.
Typically, memory foam mattresses are known to sleep hot. But Bear mattress proves that it’s not only sturdy but also excels in heat transfer. This might be because they use a cooling graphite gel in their memory foam plus the Celliant cover doubles up to help in temperature regulation.
You will have to wait for some minutes before it cools to room temperature. Overall, it performs great compared to other memory foam models.
For heavy people, the experience might be different as it tends to warm up quickly because they sink in more and the mattress contours and hug around you more tightly. So, keep that in mind while shopping for the Bear mattress.

- CertiPUR-US® Certification: Bear strives to be more eco-friendly, so the foams in this mattress are CertiPUR-US® certified for volatile organic emissions, chemicals, and is within environmentally safe standards for ozone depleters.
Bear Mattress Vs. Bear Hybrid Compared
Both beds are all-memory foam, but the Hybrid model gets extra points for its bouncy pocketed coils. This gives it a medium-firm structure that provides excellent lift, which is great for folks who toss and turn a lot more at night.
With this in mind, Bear Hybrid is quite impressive and offers great pressure relief that is needed by most side sleepers. Starting at $1090, this mattress is slightly expensive than the all-foam Bear.
Is Bear an Option for Plus Size and Obese People?
Bear is not a perfect choice for heavy folks (250 lb and over). Although it’s a 10” all-foam mattress with coils that provide overall support for heavier people, heavy sleepers will most likely sink dipper into the mattress which might not offer the required long-lasting support.
Plus-size people should look for a strong coil option. Bear Hybrid is a good option as it features powerful pocketed coils that provide additional support and comfort. Ideally, they won’t feel like they are lying on a typical all-foam surface as it comes with a quilted cover.
We think it’s a good bed, and the value isn’t bizarre for a pressure-relieving memory foam bed like Bear Hybrid.
Maintenance and Care
As is the case with most mattresses, proper care is important to ensure the mattress stays in good shape.
- For spills, clean the mattress with warm water and detergent. The cover does come off, so this should be easy and fast.
- The bear mattress is one-sided, so you don’t have to flip it. Flipping may lead to tearing of the top cover.
- It’s designed to lay flat on a hard surface including bunkie boards, adjustable bed frames, box spring, platform, floors, and foundation. After opening, allow some time for the bear bed to settle completely. It should decompress in a couple of minutes.

Does Bear Mattress need a Box Spring?
The Bear mattress will need a flat surface to support the weight of the mattress and that of the sleeper. The bed will work perfectly on a box spring (with or without a frame), an adjustable base, a platform bed, or slatted bed.
How Do You Clean a Bear Mattress?
Cleaning stains from a memory foam mattress, pillow, or topper is easy. If accidents happen and any of your bedding gets stained, dip a washcloth in lukewarm water and apply a small amount of dishwashing liquid or detergent. Additionally, you can also use water and some mild laundry detergent on a clean cloth. Scrub the stained area gently until you achieve the desired results.
How Do I Return a Bear Mattress?
After sleeping on the Bear Mattress for about 30 to 100 nights, you can request a return if you are not happy with the experience. Bear requires you to have the mattress for 30 nights before they can initiate a return. The return time frame tallies from the day of delivery. They allow one return of the Bear Mattress per household, customer, and/or delivery point.
From the review, Bear mattress is incredibly impressive. Ultimately, I see the reason why it’s considered the best for the stomach, back, and combo sleepers as it offers a firm, supportive structure, and classic memory foam feel. It’s also designed for athletic recovery, so it is a good choice for active sleepers.
